| My paintings evolve out of a process of layering , removing , re- working and pushing paint to find an inevitable form. The initial chaos and expressive brushmarks that dominate the early stages of the work are simplified and the uncomfortable and disjointed shapes are dissolved – at least partly , to create a stillness. It is a slow process and the results remain indeterminate. Subtle shifts of tone and a restricted palette may refer to the diffused light and intervals of landscape and an exploration of depths and recessions – a multi layering of muted tones with traces of the origins of the painting submerged in a veiled light. | ||||
Curious shadows , traces , imprints and memories . Shapes taken from my studio , landscape , photographs , my imagination – I am not precious at this stage . It might be a few simple lines or poured paint. I build up the surface and then simplify , removing superfluous elements that don't fit. | Boundaries and borders intrigue me How the comfort of a place can be so easily disrupted. Chance encounters that interupt the usual order, allowing the fragile and unfamiliar to re-surface and settle.
